Summary: In this poem, we see a cat who is desperately trying to save herself from drowning in a well. As the poem progresses we see the poet ask “Who put her in?” It turns out that a naughty boy called Johny Thin put the cat in the well. Further, the poet shows that a boy called Tommy Stout helped the poor little cat and pulled her out. The poem poses a question, as to why would Johny Thin try to drown a cat who did him no harm. The cat was harmless, and she also happened to keep the mouse away from the farmer’s barn. The poem seems to give a moral lesson to little children, that we must never try to harm other living beings, not even for fun.
