The Old Woman Who Lived In A Vinegar Bottle

This is one of the best fairy tales for kids, “The Old Woman Who Lived In A Vinegar Bottle“. It was a sunny day. Petunia, the wish-granting fairy, was making her rounds. She flew north, she flew south, she flew east and on Friday’s, she flew west. One Friday, as she flew through the sky, she heard a mumbling sound and looked down. Below her, she saw a large vinegar bottle. There was an old woman grumbling and complaining inside the bottle.

“Here I am! Stuck inside the vinegar bottle. Such a pity when I deserve to be in the quaint cottage in the woods breathing in the scent of honeysuckle and listening to songbirds and chirping crickets,” Maura said. Petunia paused and rubbed her chin.

Stand by your bed tonight and turn, turn, turn, then go to sleep. In the morning open your eyes and I’m certain you’ll be happy.” A bit skeptical, Maura did as Petunia asked. She turned three times before falling into a deep sleep. When she awoke, she was shocked to discover that she was living in a quaint cottage in the woods.

The next Friday, Petunia checked in on Maura. Instead of a thank you, she was surprised by what she heard. “Here I am! Stuck inside this quaint cottage in the woods where the honeysuckle makes me sneeze, the songbirds won’t stop their incessant singing, and the crickets keep me up at night,” the old woman said. “I should be in a brownstone along a city block where flowers and birds and crickets will not bother me,” she grumbled. The servants do everything for me,” the old woman said. “I should be in a palace ruling over the entire universe. Then I would have plenty to do,” she grumbled.

Petunia, ever wanting to make people happy, said to herself, “Try as I might, there is no pleasing this sour old woman. What shall I do?” “Do as I say and your wish will be granted. Stand by your bed tonight and turn, turn, turn, then go to sleep. In the morning open your eyes.” The ungrateful woman shooed her away, then did her Friday routine. She turned, turned, turned and went to sleep. In the morning, she opened her eyes and gasped! “Yes!” said Petunia, who was hovering overhead even though it was a Saturday. “You’re back where you belong.” Then she flew away, leaving the old woman inside the vinegar bottle for a lifetime of vinegar Fridays, and Saturdays, and Sundays and every days.

Some people are never happy, are they? They are always wishing for something better, but when they get it, they are still miserable. That’s because it’s not what is outside your heart that makes you happy, it’s what is inside.
